Diatomaceous Earth for Pets

First, let's begin by saying DE Food Grade is Safe for Pets!

Silicon dioxide is diatomaceous earth, a naturally-occurring material
composed of the shells of minute, single-celled algae. Silica gel is an
amorphous form of silicon dioxide. Both employ a physical mode of action
to control insects. They are abrasive and act as desiccants, removing the
oily, protective film that covers insects' bodies, causing them to dry out and
die.
It kills by physical action, not chemical. The tiny diatoms scratch off the insect's waxy coating, and dehydrate it. Which makes it great for fleas and ticks!

HI DEfoodgrade...We are so happy that we tried this in our downstairs laundry room. Tried for ten years to rid ourselves of spiders with no avail until we sprinkled some DE around baseboards. NO more spiders!! If I even see one, it is a dead one. So grateful....Thank you

Veterinary Naturopaths Drs. Kim Bloomer & Jeannie Thomason, hosts of the online radio show, Animal Talk Naturally. This what they have to say about D E... "Our work is based on natural, preventive care for animals, so of course we are always on the lookout for good, quality NATURAL products to help our clients and our listening audience that won't break the bank." "We have long been proponents of FOOD-GRADE Diatomaceous Earth as a natural pest control for both external and internal use in animals...the high quality and affordability of DE in the Permaguard product that we look for in our own personal use as well as for our clients."

Food Grade DE: the Natural Flea Control Powder, Ticks, Ear Mites and spiders! Plus.. it is also a natural organic wormer.

According to NPIC, Diatomaceous earth is not poisonous; it does not have to be eaten in order to be effective. Diatomaceous earth causes insects to dry out and die by absorbing the oils and fats from the cuticle of the insect's exoskeleton. Its sharp edges are abrasive, speeding up the process. It remains effective as long as it is kept dry and undisturbed.
DE is a health supplement for farm pets and animals. As pets get older, they often get sore hips and stiff, painful joints. Diatomaceous Earth in your pet's daily diet will reduce arthritic inflammation. Following is recommended daily doses for Dogs and Cats as an organic wormer - (complete worming can take up to a month to be safe).. Reported great results with sore and painful hips and joints, and even a fuller, healthier shiny coat as a regular daily supplement.

Large Cats: 1 teaspoon, Kittens :1/4 teaspoon, Dogs 100 lbs + : 1-2 tablespoons, Dogs 50-100lbs: 1 tablespoon, Dogs Under 50 lbs: 1 teaspoon Mini dogs: 1/2 teaspoon. DE Food Grade is as good for your pets as it is for you. For your pet's living areas, apply to moist kennel and bedding areas to reduce odors, dry the area, and stop fleas and ticks from breeding. Cat Litter-Kitty Litter: Liberally add to litter box to effectively control dampness and odors.
Here's some added bonuses! It can kill ants, bedbugs, mites, ticks and roaches, along with other creepy crawlers. DE is safe to use around children and pets. In fact, many people use DE to kill fleas on their dogs and in their homes. The powder is dusted on the animal to kill the fleas and larva. When chickens were fed a diet that contained less silicon dioxide than normal, their bone formation was harmed. This suggests that silicon dioxide plays an important role in bone formation.

Diatomaceous earth is made of silicon dioxide!

Added to livestock waters, will prevent algae from growing
Stimulates basic metabolism

Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population
Reduces annual vet bills--decreased mortality In cattle: decreased mastitis Dairy cattle: Increased milk production
Kills parasites without chemicals

Can diatomaceous earth affect birds, fish, or other wildlife? Diatomaceous earth is practically non-toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. It is commonly encountered by birds and other wildlife, and it's not known to be harmful. However, no toxicity evaluations for wildlife were found. Agencies have stated that diatomaceous earth is unlikely to affect birds, fish, or other wildlife in a harmful way.

Precautions - You should avoid allowing DE to spread through the air where it can be inhaled. It can cause lung irritation in those with asthma or lung disease. DE should always be stored in an airtight container to prevent moisture from degrading the material.

Said it before and will say it again,, use common sense. You wouldn't go around breathing in flour dust or baby powder dust!

The Solution Is Simple...Use Diatomaceous Earth!

The question we get asked most?

What is the amount of silica in the fossil shell flour? What brand do you sell? How much should I take?

Great questions! And here are the answers.

Perma-Guard Fossil Shell Flour (what we sell) is Pure Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth. OMRI listed for organic use.

It is of the highest quality available, being greater than 89% amorphous silica and less than .5% crystalline silica.

For humans, start out with a teaspoon in water, juice or morning shake. DE will start cleaning the toxins from your body so drink plenty of water. It's like when you go get a massage, they will tell you to drink lots of water to flush the toxins that were released from the massage. After a week  start taking between 1 heaping teaspoon to 2 level tablespoons a day....every day!

For pets and farm animals check our pet page for more info.
